Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” (Matthew 4:7 NIV) So does this mean we never test God? Do we live by blind faith? I don't think so. In the Scripture Jesus is quoting, the Israelites weren't trusting God to take care of their present need. God had demonstrated His power and presence in Egypt with His miracles, He had destroyed the Pharaoh's army, He had been with them in a cloud of fire and smoke. God had proven that He was with them. In Jesus' situation, God had just appeared to him and said that he was His beloved Son. To test God now, in this way, would be like saying I know you did these other things but can you take care of me now. Of course God can take care of you now! God doesn't ask us to blindly follow us. He has given us His Holy word to show us who He is. Most of all, He has given us His only Son to show us how much He loves us. He asks us to believe in something that rests upon a firm foundation.
How have I seen God at work in my life and the lives of others?
Do I trust that God will still take care of me today?
Lord, forgive me for forgetting who you are and what you have done. I'm sorry for testing you over and over again. Thank you for your faithfulness today and through all generations.
