Jesus answered, “It
is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes
from the mouth of God.” In general, I think we’re more health conscious today. We are more aware of what we put in our
bodies. Manufacturers are required to
put nutritional information on all of our consumable products. My wife is not eating glutton and she talks
about eating “super foods”. Jesus quotes
this Scripture from Deuteronomy chapter 8 where Moses reminds the Israelites
how God had tested and provided for them in the wilderness for forty
years. Just as God had supernaturally provided
manna from heaven to feed them physically He also provides His Word to feed us
spiritually. We are not just physical
beings; we are spiritual as well.
Feeding our spirit is just as important as feeding our stomachs. According to John 6:51, Jesus said, “I am the
living bread that came down from
heaven.” John also said that Jesus was
the Word of God “In the beginning was the Word, and the
Word was with God,
and the Word was God.” I hope that
during this Lent as we journey towards the cross and resurrection we will
consider how we are feeding our spirit.
Am I more concerned about my physical
condition than I am about my spiritual?
What am I feeding my spirit with? Is it healthy? Is it a “super food”?
Lord, help me to feed on your word and be
just as much concerned about my spiritual condition as I am about my physical. Help me to experience your Son, the Bread of
Life, more today. Amen.
