Matt 4:8 “Again, the devil took him to a
very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their
splendor.” This reminds me of Eve
in the garden. When she saw that the
fruit was pleasing to the eye and desirable she took it and ate it. The eyes are one of the devil’s favorite ways
to tempt. Shiny new cars, sparkling jewelry,
beautiful homes, sleek boats. These are
just a few of the things that catch our eye.
What are we willing to pay for them? Jesus tells us in Matt 18:9 “And if your eye causes you to stumble,
gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with
one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.”
Jesus isn’t advocating self-mutilation, but he is saying that our eyes can be a
source of temptation and we need to recognize that and take drastic action to
prevent it.
What is it that catches my eye that is
desirable?
How do I measure the true cost of following
my eyes?
What am I focusing on?
Lord, thank you for the beauty of your
creation and for giving me eyes to enjoy it.
Forgive me when my eyes cause me to stumble and fall. Help me to fix my eyes not on what is
seen, but on what is unseen, since
what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. Amen.
